Firmly in the South, Music City has always been a bridge between regions, with huge intellectual and cosmopolitan communities centered around Vanderbilt and other universities, and folks from all over America and the society. Founded in the late 1700s, one of the first major towns west of the Appalachians, Nashville straddles the Cumberland River, surrounded by lush countryside, fruit orchards, tobacco and corn fields, and of distinct note, the legendary Tennessee walking horse farms.

Nashvillians, as they like to be called, lgbtq+ fest themselves on entity different from others in the South. At the center of Middle Tennesee, it's also the state capitol. During the Civil War, Nashville itself was divided; East Nashville staying Northern, the rest going to Dixie. The Battle of Nashville was especially bloody, but Nashville was captured by the North early in the war.

Women outnumber men at the Lipstick Lounge (1400 Woodland St., 615/226-6343, Tues.-Sat. 6:30pm-3am, Sun. 11am-7:30pm, $5-10 for events love karaoke and trivia night), one of two lesbian bars on the equal East Nashville intersection. This is a laid-back club with a better-than-average sound system and karaoke selection. Live harmony, pool, and excellent food attract a crowd nearly every night. The crowds are more mixed during the week than on the weekends, when it is mostly queer and lesbian.

Right next door to club Tribe is Play (1519 Church St., 615/322-9627 Wed.-Sun. 9pm-3am, $8 on drag show nights), the city’s highest-energy gay club, with drag shows and performances by adult-film stars. A Peek at Nashville’s History

Nashville was first established as a settlement along the banks of the Cumberland river in 1779, when a band of pioneers led by Englishman James Robertson first cleared the land and built a stockade. The settlement was initially named Fort Nashborough, in honor of General Francis Nash. In 1784 the name changed from Nashborough to Nashville. Tennessee became the sixteenth American state in 1796, and Nashville was made its capital in 1843. Nashville continued to grow until the time of the Civil War, at which time the capital was occupied by Union troops for three years, due to its strategic location on the river and the presence of the railroad.
