Dangerous things you’re doing that really piss off truckers
I will never know how hard it is to be an over-the-road trucker. I got only the slightest hint of it this weekend, yet it was still an eye-opener.
My son needed to move two packed rooms of furniture from New Jersey up to an apartment in Vermont he’s sharing this year with college roommates. He’s entering his junior year and no longer needs to be in a dorm. I also needed to move some of my stuff to the recent place I’m moving to in Matawan.
The solution was a 22-foot rental truck. A straight box truck with limited visibility, just the two sideview mirrors. This truck was far from the biggest thing, but I can reveal you the only problem driving it was other people.
Even a smaller vertical truck like this, no one wants to get stuck behind it. I had countless glaring examples of dumb driving moves that I’m sure still can’t hold a candle to the bad maneuvers tractor-trailer drivers have to contend with daily.
The first thing that surprised me was just how many people try to pass a truck on the right instead of the left, even when it’s obvious our range of vision is so limited. I was al
Earlier this week I went to the Museum of Satisfactory Arts (MFA) Boston to see the Fashioned by Sargentexhibit, which closes in two weeks. This exhibit from the MFA is one of my favorites in recent memory. Perhaps Bostonians more than most Americans are interested in Sargent because of how much of his work has ended up here but it was apparent this exhibit has been embraced by the city. When I remarked about the crowds the day I visited, one of the MFA employees told me the exhibit had been very well attended.
In this exhibit the MFA looks at some of the artist’s most celebrated portraits and shares how Sargent meticulously dressed and posed each of his subjects; sometimes quite provocatively. A wonderful example is his scandalous portrait of Virginie Amélie Avegno, a.k.a. Madame X, which caused an uproar when it was shown in Paris in 1884 because it emphasized the sexual allure of a married woman. It’s incredible to think this portrait ruined the reputation of Virginie Amélie Avegno in Parisian society.
In addition to watercolors and his attractive portraits, the exhibit brings many paintings to life by exhibiting the dresses and in some cases accessories besides the pa

Harvard College Closes Diversity Offices, Reassigns Staff to Fresh ‘Harvard Foundation’
Harvard College will close its offices for minority students, LGBTQ students, and women and fold their staff and programs into a new center within the Office of Culture and Community, according to a Wednesday word from College Dean David J. Deming.
In place of the three centers, the College will establish the “Harvard Foundation” within the recently-formed OCC, under the College’s Dean of Students Office. Current staff from the Harvard College Women’s Center, Office for BGLTQ Student Life, and Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations will be reassigned to the Foundation.
Roughly 50 employees worked at the three offices, including more than 15 student interns, according to archived versions of their websites.
“All College services remain available to every student,” Deming wrote in the email, which was sent to College staff. “ With this fresh structure, we embody our commitment to supporting our entire student body.”
The College quietly removed the websites for the three centers two weeks ago, replacing them with a work-in-progress page containing information about the OACC.
