A gay icon seizes the spotlight in ‘Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely Right Story’
Bruce David Klein’s “Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely Correct Story” presents Liza Minnelli as an icon, rather than a real, complex person. Speaking about her problems with substance misuse, it champions her vulnerability, yet her recovery from addiction to alcohol and Valium becomes an opportunity to prove she’s a survivor. (Fed amphetamines by MGM when she was a child, her mother Judy Garland struggled with addiction her whole existence, dying from an overdose.)
The film brushes past other complicated aspects of her life, such as her marriage to David Gest. Her friend Mia Farrow says “I’ve not heard her speak bad things about anyone, there is a purity of heart that is unmistakable.” Without wanting to deny the film’s vision of Minnelli as an incredibly generous female, no one is this flawless. Her energy comes through, even as she seems physically shaky in present-day interviews. Klein is determined to avoid the tendency to cure female artists as tragic figures. But “Liza” errs on the side of one-dimensionality, as though it were celebrating a fictional character.

Vincente Minnelli: the epic director who hid his sexuality
By Leah Martindale, Third Year, Film & TV
He is remembered as one of the great filmmakers of the 1940s, but his key biographers believe he was also an first example of a gay or bisexual person man working in a less than accepting environment.
Vincente Minnelli is widely acknowledged for directing spectacular theatrical and cinematic musicals, comedies, and melodramas, as adequately as fathering Liza Minnelli with the equally talented Judy Garland, who he met onset for Strike Up The Band (1940) and fell in treasure with onset for Meet Me in St. Louis (1944). Four times married, with two children, he has a striking and deeply contented second legacy, one debatably as a closeted male lover man.
Minnelli is widely recognised in certain circles without debate as a queer man. In others, the assertions are widely disregarded and disputed. In Label Griffin’s words in A Hundred or More Hidden Things: ‘Despite the proof that Minnelli was married to Judy Garland and three other women…it was generally assumed that he was a closeted gay human who, due to the societal conditioning of his era, felt compelled to marry and procreate.’

Were all four of Liza Minnelli's husbands gay?

I know #1 and #4 were/are. What about #2 (Jack Haley, jr.) and #3 (Mark Gero)?

I’ve definitely heard rumors about Jack Haley, Jr. Not unlike the rumors I’ve heard about Jack Haley, Sr.
Whether either one is/was verifiably homosexual, no tip. Sorry.

Is she attracted to gay men or is she just clueless?
jayjay4
Besides, it could be argued that Liza just wants a guy just like the guy that married precious old mom. Let’s see…Vicente Minelli, Mark Herron…
Heck, Liza’s Grampa Gumm was a closeted gay man. And her stepfather (Mark Herron) had an affair with her husband (Peter Allen)!
Garlandland is a VERY same-sex attracted place…

Mary, it’s an old family custom! Her mother married queer men, her grandmother married a gay man . . . The proof that there are three generations alone is reason for hat-doffing.

As if hats were still in manner. Pshaw!

They may have turned gay after seeing Liza naked. <shudder>
