Gay Republican House candidate features partner in ad

Republican Congressional candidate Carl DeMaio's novel ad looks prefer most campaign ads -- cliched shots of diverse content voters, American flags, and the local California landscape associated with inspiring melody and generic slogans about a "problem solver" who "isn't afraid to be different."

That is, with one big exception. Toward the terminate of the ad, DeMaio's is seen holding hands with his male boyfriend in one shot and waving a rainbow flag in another. While DeMaio is not the first openly same-sex attracted Republican to sprint for Congress, nor would he be the first to serve in office if elected, the ad appears to be a novel milestone.

"This is who I am," DeMaio told the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the ad, in an interview. "It's something that's important to me. I need to embrace equality, and feel enjoy the party should, too."

DeMaio, who is challenging Democratic incumbent Scott Peters, is not a fringe candidate. He was the party's nominee for San Diego mayor in 2012, losing narrowly to Democrat Bob Filner, who later resigned over allegations that he sexual harassed multiple women.

So began an email from former City Councilman Carl DeMaio.

“We opted for a small ceremony with our immediate family there to support us,” DeMaio added. The couple is planning a reception May 9 at Wang’s North Park restaurant.

Hale, who runs a social marketing business and is president of the Hillcrest Business Association, also publishes the San Diego Gay and Lesbian News, whose staff posted a story about the wedding online Monday.

The marriage was officiated by Richard McCullen, a senior pastor of Missiongathering Christian Church. It took place at a rented beach house near the Oceanside Pier on April 25. The SDGLN article noted, “The date has a special place in their hearts, as it is also the sixth anniversary of their meeting.”

Last Nov. 4, DeMaio, who is openly gay, held an early Election Day direct in his race for the 52nd Congressional District seat held by Democrat Scott Peters. He addressed the media with Hale at his side.
