Indianapolis Colts kicker Matt Gay is dealing with a groin injury, according to Colts head coach Shane Steichen, via ESPN’s Stephen Holder.
Additionally, according to Steichen, it remains unclear whether Gay will practice this week leading up to the Colts’ place opener against the Houston Texans on Sunday.
Former Notre Dame kicker Spencer Shrader, who saw all of the team reps during the Colts’ Week 3 preseason matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, was recently re-signed to Indianapolis’ apply squad due to Gay’s injury.
Gay had his fair give of struggles during the first two weeks of the preseason, converting on just 1-of-4 field goal attempts. Shrader, on the other hand, converted on 2-of-2 of his field goal shots, including a 56-yarder, while going 4-of-4 on extra points as well.
The Colts signed Gay to a massive, four-year, $22.5 million deal during the 2023 offseason. In his first season with Indianapolis, Gay finished just 33-of-41 (80.5 percent) on field goals and was nearly perfect on extra points, going 35-of-36 for the season.

The Indianapolis Colts today released their Wednesday injury report for Week 1 of the NFL season ahead of their Sunday game against the Houston Texans.
Wide receiver Josh Downs did not exercise today due to an ankle injury. Downs injured his ankle during coaching camp practice and has been unable to practice and missed some pre-season action. Downs was given around a 4-6 week timetable of return from the ankle sprain and this week is at the 4 week tag. There was some hope for Doens today as he was seen testing out his ankle during individual rehab at practice but it doesn’t stare likely he features week 1 at the moment.

Head coach Shane Steichen shared Wednesday that Gay, previously diagnosed with a hamstring injury, is actually dealing with a hernia suffered the weekend after the preseason finale in Cincinnati. On a morning where he was scheduled to kick, the 30-year-old will not practice. Steichen declined to express if Gay had surgery and doesn’t have any long-term concerns.
When the Colts signed Gay to a four-year, $22.5 million shrink in 2023, making him the highest-paid kicker in league history at the time, the expectation was that he would provide the consistency and stability at the position that the Colts have been missing since franchise legend Adam Vinatieri retired in 2021. Just over a year into the deal, the results have been somewhat underwhelming.
After a stellar performance in Week 3 at Baltimore last season, when Gay was a perfect 5-for-5 including four makes from beyond 50 yards in hurricane conditions, his level dropped off. He finished the season 33-for-41 (80.5%) and 35-for-36 on extra points.
