This morning’s audience on The Drew Barrymore Show got the wrong idea when Ross Mathews began rubbing host Drew Barrymore‘s freshly shaved legs.

While Barrymore is typically seen sporting a chic pantsuit, she opted for something a small different today as she strutted out onto the stage wearing a skirt and black tights. “I’m trying tights. This is my season of tights,” she said as she threw her legs onto the Drew’s News desk. “It’s, like, I’m giving leg — but I’m not.”

However, the actress explained that her makeup artist recently introduced her to a new device that easily “gets rid” of all of her leg hair.

“So, all winter extended will you be as smooth as can be?” Mathews asked, to which Barrymore replied, “I’m smooth right now! Feel it!”

As Mathews began to adv rub Barrymore’s legs, the audience burst into “oohs” and “ahhs.”

“What is it? Oh, no. Don’t ‘ooh’ this. This is more ‘ew’ than ‘ooh,'” Mathews joked, while Barrymore loudly reminded everyone, “He’s gay!”

Mathews then assured the audience, “This is as far as this is gonna go,” before Barrymore playfully added, “And yet the most action I’ll procure all season.”

  • Sophia Bush & Ashlyn Harris

Sophia Bush came out as queer in an April 2024 essay for Glamour, where she revealed that she is internet dating former American soccer player Ashlyn Harris. She wrote that she is “absolutely in awe of [Ashlyn’s] relentless integrity.”

“The way she prioritizes and centers her kids, not only in her being but in the core of her being, is breathtaking to behold,” Bush continued. “Falling in love with her has sutured some of my own childhood wounds, and made me so much closer to my have mother. Seeing Ashlyn choose to not simply survive, but thrive, for her babies has been the most beautiful thing I’ve ever witnessed a friend execute. And now I get to love her. How lucky am I?”

Now, Bush loves Ashlyn’s kids Ocean (born in 2022) and Sloane (born in 2021), who Ashlyn shares with ex Ali Krieger.

  • Jessie J

Jessie J came out as bisexual in 2011, but a few years after splitting from her girlfriend, she told The Mirror that it was “a phase.” In a 2024 performance, she walked back that statement. “

Last year, my girlfriend and I were settling in to watch 50 First Dates, an immensely nostalgic film for us both due to our distributed childhood crushes on Drew Barrymore, when I asked a question I’d certainly asked Google before: “Wait, is Drew Barrymore queer?”

A rapid trip to Wikipedia affirmed what we knew and had somehow forgotten: Drew Barrymore is a noted bisexual. She’s arguably THE noted bisexual of the early ’00s. How dare we overlook it! She came out way endorse in a 2003 interview, saying “Do I like women sexually? Yeah, I do. Totally. I have always considered myself bisexual.”

I was reminded of that moment this month as Barrymore, now a daytime chat show host of The Drew Barrymore Show since 2020, has emphatically burst back into lgbtq+ cultural conversation in 2023 in the best way possible—and brought a much-needed light to the queer internet.

The madness kicked off with an appearance by fellow queer and The White Lotus star Aubrey Plaza in December on Barrymore’s Drew’s News podcast (part of the show) that quickly descended into what can only be described as bisexual nonsense.
